Engine Candy – Osella/BMW M12 Does Hillclimb
Ripping Up The Hill
This segment showcases the torque curve of the turbocharged BMW M12 engine, when mated to an Osella PA20 sports racer, during sessions involving the European Hillclimb Championship. The 1.5 liter 4-cylinder, was originally applied as a Formula One variant, based on the 1961 BMW M10 engine. The powerplant was ultimately run by Brabham F1 cars, followed by both the Arrows and Benetton marques. Nelson Piquet won the FIA Formula One Drivers’ Championship in 1983 driving a BMW M12-Brabham.
After years of trying Osella terminated its F1 efforts, and the brand returned its roots by building a generally-successful series of two-seat sports racers, primarily oriented to hillclimb events. The company created an Osella works hillclimb team, and in 1995, Pasquale Irlando won all 9 races of the European hillclimb championship driving an Osella PA18, then repeated in 1997, 1998 and 1999.
